Lion of Amphipolis
The Lion of Amphipolis is an impressive ancient monument dating back to the 4th century BC, making it one of the most significant and oldest sculptures in Greece. It is believed to have been built in the period following the death of Alexander the Great (323 BC) and may be associated with one of his generals or high-ranking military commanders.
Amphipolis was an important military and trade center in the Macedonian Empire, and some historians suggest that the monument was erected in honor of Laomedon of Mytilene or Nearchus, both close companions of Alexander. The Lion symbolizes strength, grandeur, and military power, making it one of the most remarkable ancient creations.
The sculpture was discovered in fragments in the early 20th century and was fully restored in 1937. Today, it stands as a remarkable historical symbol, attracting visitors with its magnificence and mystery.
Located just 15 minutes by car from Asprovalta, it is a must-visit destination for history and archaeology enthusiasts.
Stageira ( The Birthplace of Aristotle) is one of the most significant and oldest cities in Northern Greece, known as the birthplace of the great philosopher Aristotle (384 BC). Founded in the 7th century BC by Ionian colonists, the city played an important role in ancient history. Centuries later, by the command of Philip II of Macedon (father of Alexander the Great), Stageira was restored in honor of Aristotle, who had been the teacher of the young Macedonian king.
Today, you can explore remains of ancient fortifications, buildings, and temples, which reveal the city's rich history, as well as enjoy impressive views of the Aegean Sea.
